“Mutual Aid”

Fire departments across the country have mutual aid agreements with

neighboring departments to come to each other’s aid when called upon.

Ithaca Fire Department and Cayuga Heights Fire Department
in upstate New York have such a mutual aid agreement. Their trucks are

often seen racing to each other’s district to lend a hand.

Here, Cayuga Heights Engine 203 is on standby at Ithaca Central Station,

February 2003. Engine 203 is a 2001 Pierce Contender Series.

Alongside 203 is Ithaca’s reserve Engine 904, a 1985

American LaFrance Century Series pumper.

These two engines standing side-by-side symbolize the

connection among firefighters everywhere.
