“PFD at Work”

This painting is based on a visit I made to Engine 5, Ladder 6, Battalion 7 housed on Market St. in Southwest Philadelphia in Spring 2004. Although Engine 5 is one of the busiest Engines in the city, the two nights I was there were fairly slow. So, this painting is based on a combination of material gathered there and with Engine 50, Ladder 12 in North Philly, another very busy house. My thanks to the guys for their hospitality.

The scene depicts a third floor apartment fire in attached units after the fire has been knocked down. Due to the numerous overhead wires crisscrossing the street, the aerials were positioned at the ends of the buildings and the engines pulled up front.

Engine 5 is a 1995 KME 1500 gpm engine. The engine on the left is an Emergency One 1000 gpm engine and Engine 44 in the background is one of a few older Seagraves still in service and which are slowly being phased out.
